Sponsor A Ride to Expand Internationally; Underwrites Local Travel for at-risk Asians and Others

CUPERTINO, CALIF – June 2, 2021 – Since early May, Sponsor a Ride has been underwriting local transportation in urban areas for at-risk Asians who feel threatened by ongoing violence – specifically females, seniors, and the disabled. They provide free Uber, Lyft, and cab rides for individuals who meet the criteria and apply. Starting June 30, services will be available in select overseas destinations.

“It started when someone on the Auckland Ferry in New Zealand reached out to us”, says SAR co-founder Anna Chu Lin. “The next day someone from Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo needed a ride to reach relatives stranded by the eruption of the volcano Mt. Nyiragongo.”  Sponsor a Ride stresses that for now the focus of their efforts is still AAPI users in North American who need rides because they fear violence if they walk or take public transit, but in certain cases other necessary humanitarian trips can be subsidized also.  “We are talking with ePickMeUp in the Philippines, Ola in India, and Grab and Gojek in Indonesia. There is a large unrecognized need for what we do,” says co-founder Amy Chang.

Sponsor A Ride is funded entirely by donors.  These are recognized by inclusion in the group’s Circle of Heroes.

“We love our sponsors” says Chang. “We absolutely could not do what we do without them. They should be recognized eternally for helping Asian Americans in need, especially those who must travel nowadays in areas where Asians are routinely harassed.”  In practice this means that Heroes are mentioned in the group’s social media and press releases.

The group emphasizes that the assistance they provide is measurable, visible, and immediate.

And what happens when violence against Asians decreases (if it does)? “We would love nothing better than to be put out of business!” says SAR Logistics Coordinator Soan Gunawan, “because that would mean the anti-AAPI hate crimes have gone down. But we may well decide to continue, concentrating on providing free rides for Seniors and the disabled of all races everywhere, because that will always be needed.  In any case our promotion of members of the ‘Circle of Heroes’ will continue forever.”
